Vancouver Counselling Expert Holds Workshop at 2015 Couples Conference

Vancouver, BC (March 30, 2015) – Vancouver counselling expert and director of The Good Life Therapy Centre Sue Diamond Potts is to co-host a workshop with renowned professional Dr. Ellyn Bader at the 2015 Couples Conference. The workshop, entitled “Addiction and Self-Absorption”, will address two of the most challenging issues in couples therapy. The conference will be held at The Marriot in Manhattan Beach, California from April 24 to 26.

The Couples Conference is an annual event held to help professionals in various fields to increase their clinical effectiveness. The event is open to professionals in health and mental health-related fields. This includes doctoral-level psychologists, physicians, and dentists who are members of professional organizations such as the AMA, APA, ADA, etc. Professionals with health-related graduate degrees from accredited institutions, as well as full-time graduate students in accredited programs, are also encouraged to attend.

On the first day of the Couples Conference, the Addiction and Self-Absorption workshop will be scheduled to take place from 3:45 to 5:45 PM. During this session, the presenters, Dr. Bader, and Ms. Diamond Potts will talk about how therapists can make strategic treatment decisions to inspire couples to have more collaborative functioning and achieve sobriety through the Developmental Model of Couples Therapy. During the workshop, case examples will be used to demonstrate the hurdles one individual overcomes when confronting partners with an addictive or self-absorbed nature. These examples will also show how to support the couple’s developmental growth through the process.

This year’s Couple Conference is geared towards comparing professional perspectives to turn them into specific interventions and evaluating basic principles of learning institutions for couples therapy. It is also aimed at using experimental methods for successful couples counselling and comprehending commonalities that factor into a successful clinical work.

Be Yourself – accomplish your dreams! – sounds obvious, but not really. How often do you think, “I’m not as good as…they won’t like me…or accept me…? Then the merry-go-round of “who do I need to be to be with you? It’s exhausting. Just be yourself. Think of Mahatma Gandhi. When he was asked what he would wear if invited to visit the British Prime Minister, he replied that he would wear what he always did, his dhoti. He said that to wear a suit would be thoroughly inauthentic. Hmm. He did attend that meeting in his dhoti and we all know what he accomplished being himself.

“The Habit of Everything” – The reason I say this is because habit is pervasive and it keeps us from making mindful choices. It is about unconscious, automatic reactions to life, rather than conscious, deliberate actions based on how we define our highest self. Habit is not right/wrong; good/bad – it just is. And it can keep us stuck believing that it is “just who I am”, when actually you are infinitely variable. How much does habit rule your life? dictate your behavior under stress? limit your potential to risk, stretch and grow? Pay attention and ask yourself, is this who you want to be – or are you willing to challenge yourself to try something new?

Although post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is often diagnosed in people affected by war, trauma can be caused by other experiences such as domestic violence, child abuse, car accidents, and natural disasters. This condition can severely affect a person’s behavior and his or her relationships with other people. Counselling for Vancouver patients diagnosed with the disorder is important; even talking about one’s traumatic experience can greatly help people dealing with the problems caused by PTSD.

There is so much more to who we are than our physical form. It’s sometimes difficult to remember that when our culture promotes so much attention on our outward appearance. However, paying attention to our inner selves and all the non-physical aspects within – subtle shifts and changes that we perceive when we focus on self – is the highest work we can do. Take time today to look within “with great joy” and notice your non-physical reality. By paying close attention to the life force within, we can feel more peace, more calm and understand the meaning of true beauty.
